An introduction to the major Taoist scriptures studied and recited within the Quanzhen Longmen tradition — with context on their significance and core teachings.
The foundational text of Taoist thought, attributed to Laozi (老子). The Dao De Jing's 81 chapters explore the nature of the Dao, the virtue of non-action (無為), and the principles of harmony and balance. It is studied by all practitioners in the Quanzhen tradition as the bedrock of Taoist philosophy.
One of the most frequently recited texts in the Quanzhen tradition. The Qing Jing Jing teaches that the human heart, when freed from desire and agitation, naturally returns to clarity and stillness — and in that stillness, the Dao is revealed. A foundational text for inner cultivation practice.
The scripture dedicated to the Seven Lords of the North Dipper (北斗七元君). Recited during the monthly Lidou ritual and other ceremonial occasions, the Bei Dou Jing invokes the seven lords for the resolution of karmic obstacles, extension of life, and the bestowal of blessings. Central to Quanzhen Longmen liturgical practice.
Alongside the Dao De Jing, the Zhuangzi is one of the two pillars of classical Taoist literature. Its parables, dialogues, and philosophical explorations on freedom, transformation, and the nature of knowledge have shaped Taoist thought for over two millennia. The Quanzhen school draws heavily on Zhuangzi's vision of naturalness (自然) and the equality of all things (齊物).
The canonical text venerating 玉皇大天尊, the Jade Emperor — supreme ruler of Heaven and Earth in the Taoist pantheon. Recited during major ritual ceremonies, the Yu Huang Jing affirms the sovereignty of the Jade Emperor over the cosmic order and is a key liturgical text in Quanzhen ceremonial practice.
